Italian Meatball Burgers

Italian Meatball Burgers (Adapted from CL)

16 ounces ground sirloin
8 ounces hot Italian turkey sausage, casings removed
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds, crushed
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
2 to 3 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced
6 burger buns, split and lightly toasted
3/4 cup warmed marinara sauce

Preheat grill.

In a large bowl, add sirloin, sausage, oregano, basil, fennel seeds, salt, pepper and garlic powder - mix just until combined. Evenly divide beef mixture into 6 portions, shaping each into a patty. Press your thumb in the middle of each burger to make an indent - this helps keep the burger from being misshapen once it has cooked.

Place burgers onto the grill and cook for about 5 minutes, turn patties over and cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Evenly divide fresh mozzarella over each patty and continue to cook until the burgers are cooked through and reach 165 degrees on an instant read thermometer. Remove burgers from the grill and let rest for 5 minutes.

Place 1 patty on the bottom half of each bun - top each with about 2 tablespoons of the sauce and the top half of the bun.

Makes 6 servings.
